Oh hey, broken optical drive
Apple should really just give me a new laptop at this point, as this one is a total lemon. But I’m not going to attempt to go into lemon laws in Berlin, where there isn’t even an Apple store proper (we have Gravis, which is an authorized reseller and will do AppleCare repairs, but probably won’t replace the thing for free for me), and I’m not going to travel to Frankfurt...

So I'm looking at my credit report
And I don’t know what to do here.  There’s an account that appears to have been opened in my name when I was 9 years old. A credit card with a $14,000 limit. It was closed in October 2008, and doesn’t seem to be hurting me in anyway, but this was not an account opened by me, nor anyone in my family in my name. I don’t know what, if anything, I can do here, as the account...

Little Girls and Inert Parents
We live in a really beautiful, historic building with some really friendly, interesting neighbors. The woman that used to live below us (before we moved into the new apartment) is very sweet. The girl that used to live next door to us (who now lives directly below us) is a bit quacky but still pleasant enough, and the man that now lives next door to us is awesome - although I’ve only met him...

This is probably an overshare
I’m really fucking hairy. Like, absurdly hairy. I stopped shaving for the better part of three months because I get so many ingrown hairs from hair removal that I end up getting frustrated and the frustration isn’t worth the awesome feeling of being smooth. Add to that, then, that my (dark black) hair roots are super close to the surface of my skin (a skin so pale that I actually am...

But it’s just finally becoming warm enough that I’ve looked at the lineup. The screen is five blocks away from here, and they play movies every night all summer long, including some movies I’ve been dying to see - Berlin Calling and Neukölln Unlimited - and some old favorites - like The Big Lebowski. I’m psyched dude.

I have 18 days in October to kill while waiting for school to begin, during which time I have absolutely no plans whatsoever. This, obviously, presents several options - one of which is to fly to Iceland, which I’ve been dying to do. Another is to stay on continent and take a couple side trips - flights to Copenhagen are currently $50, and London is under $40 (via Ryanair and Easyjet, but at...

So after fixing my bicycle lock with a paperclip, and managing to get both the curtain rods and curtains hung, yet another problem has arose. This morning, after nearly throwing up as I took out the garbage before hopping onto my bike, Jeff called down to me in the courtyard and alerted me that I had forgotten my helmet upstairs. He threw it down to where I stood in the courtyard from our 4th...

Yesterday, after a trip to IKEA (where we bought two new dressers - one to be used as such, and one to be used as a bar - and picked out our new sofa, which unfortunately was out of stock) I threw the pear crisp that I had previously assembled into the oven. It was awesome. I pretty much followed Deb’s recipe at the smitten kitchen, however butter estimates were probably way off (we...

SOMEHOW, ON THE WAY TO SCHOOL THIS MORNING, A ROCK OR SOMETHING ELSE VERY SMALL MANAGED TO GET INTO THE KEYHOLE ON MY BIKE LOCK AND NOW I CANNOT UNLOCK IT FROM IT’S HOLDER IN ORDER TO LOCK IT UP AT SCHOOL. Of course this would happen to me. Guess I need to go to the bike store today instead of tomorrow.

oh, and
He claimed he couldn’t fully explain it and would later, but I think seeing how angry I became deterred him from doing so, as he didn’t make any attempts after class.

In class this week, we’re giving presentations on a topic of our choice to learn how to properly write and present assignments in German so that we don’t all look like total fools. (Today we saw three: renewable energy, foie gras, and the one that I’m about to tell you about. Mine is on the abolition of nuclear weapons.) The class consists of 15 students (plus an amazing teacher)...

Potée de jeunes légumes, sauce au foie gras
I posted about this last year when I had it for dinner, and thanks to the presentation on foie gras that just took place in my class, I have been reminded of how awesome it was.  Recipe available here, and it’s totally worth trying out if you live in a city where you can actually get your hands on foie gras.

Really glad I only spent something like 8 bucks (as opposed to the $50 something it retailed for) on my charm bracelet, as it turned my wrist green.

Today, I am wearing my Rachel Essex “Born in the USA” charm bracelet, complete with a New Hampshire charm that brings me close to home.  I also ordered four dresses from La Redoute. Would post pictures, however they do this strange this where you can’t see the actual items in your order history after you order them - just the type of article you ordered, the color, and size....

I’m on the search for cute (and cheap!) sundresses for the summer. Yesterday’s trip to H&M ended completely empty handed, and everything on ASOS is either more money than I want to spend, or not cute enough. Fortunately, I’m currently browsing La Redoute and have found about a million things that fit the bill and are pretty reasonably priced (everything I want is under €15,...

So the cable wasn't installed on Thursday
Because the wire running from the basement to our apartment is defective, or something, so now I’m waiting for the cable company’s appointment maker to return the phone call I just made (it’ll be within 30 minutes, supposedly) so that we can sort this all out once and for all. So we’ve been using the surf stick and tethering phones for internet at home. My phone has...

Sitting on the canal, waiting for a taxi to arrive
It’s 70 and sunny and Jeffrey will be arriving from the airport any moment now. The cable man will arrive shortly thereafter. I am so excited. Shut up, you would be too.

The cable man is coming on Thursday
I put it into my phone’s calendar as “kabel” without thinking twice. Having internet again will be great.
